Puberty.

What an odd, almost clinical word to describe the changes that mark the beginning of the rest of your daughter’s life.

One day she’s a kid smelling like cotton candy, with a stick-straight body, and a smile that could melt your heart. And the next …? You remember, don’t you? Almost overnight, you’re a few inches taller, those straight lines a bit curvier, and your clothes a few sizes too small. Just under the nipples tiny swellings made an appearance, as your breasts began to develop. Soft fuzz magically grew in places you never imagined had a single follicle. And the up-turned corners of your smile now had a hint of attitude.

Confusing? Sure. A little scary? You bet it was.

Something was going on. Something important – even mysterious - was happening to your body, and you didn’t have a clue. Your friends were no help. They were in the same boat, and had only schoolyard myths to offer. Your parents? You knew this was a subject that made them uncomfortable. Something they didn’t really want to talk about. If you were one of the lucky ones, The Talk armed you with information you needed, and made you feel good about yourself. But if you had the same experience we did, The Talk was a jittery, circumspect, one-way lecture filled with words like “the curse” and “your friend”. Pretty much long on oration, and short on facts and feelings.

As registered nurses, Tara Harrington and Susanne Marcotte-Carroll have watched the scene played out daily. Anxious kids. Uneasy parents. Little information. And little interaction between parents and children. Often, we’re the mediators and the information providers. But that only helps a small fraction of the millions of young girls entering puberty each year. Something was needed that could provide young girls and their parents a truthful, educational, entertaining - and above all, empowering way to make the transition from childhood to puberty easier and informative.

After a great deal of research we realized that there isn’t anything available that we as mothers would want our daughters to have. What brought this problem close to home is that we have five daughters between us, and all are entering the vulnerable time of puberty. Now the pressure was really on!

That’s why we developed CHANGES. It will ensure that your daughter is equipped to handle this important time in her life, come out of it a whole person, and strengthen the bonds of your relationship.

CHANGES is an invaluable tool to help young girls navigate the rocky road to adolescence and beyond. And for you and your daughter to begin to forge the bonds of an intimate and open dialogue based on shared experience. As important as that is, CHANGES is designed to give your daughter the power to be who she is and express how she feels in appropriate and personal ways.
